Bride and Groom Cutting The Cake

In August of 2007, I received a phone call from a bride who wanted to order a “traditionally posed cake topper (bride and groom standing side by side)” only she wanted it to be “a little bigger” and “just the heads!” This extremely unusual request caught my attention for several reasons. (1) I always want to sculpt larger (2) My favorite part to sculpt is the face/head (3) the AC units in my studio just broke and it was 100 degrees in Austin, TX! I accepted the commission but I needed to speak to the baker, Nikki Jackson of Absolutely Edible Cakes in Dallas-TX, so I could find out the exact size I was suppose to sculpt. Originally, I was told “half-scale” but when I received the foam sculpted torso that Nikki would be using, I discovered it was to be life size! To clarify, I sculpted the head, shoulders and arms out of polymer clay. The only cake part was the “skirt” just as it is with a Barbie Cake. I was not prepared for the amount of attention this life size “Bride Cake” would receive! Images of the cake have appeared on local and national news, on CNN.com, Inside Edition, In Touch Weekly and countless blogs, forums, pins and posts. Enormous amounts of misinformation has been posted. For starters, the bride and groom were celebrating their 10 year wedding anniversary. The bride originally wanted to have the bride AND groom cakes but we ran out of time. The entire thing is not made of cake – the portrait part (the head) is clay.

I have been asked many times if I would create another one. The answer is of course! I have actually created several smaller versions for sweet sixteen celebrations and they have turned out amazing!

Beach Theme Personalized Wedding Cake Topper

Are you planning a Beach Themed Wedding?  I imagine a wedding on the beach to be one of the most fun types of weddings one can attend!  I know the cake toppers that I have created in the past for the beach themed weddings have been the most creative personalized wedding cake toppers ever!  Brides have had me sculpt them as mermaids and the grooms as scuba divers.  I have even made a pair crabs with a veil and a top hat for on couples’ custom cake topper!  Of course, there have been some very elegant personalized cake toppers created such as the Navy Sailor kissing his Bride on the the beach.   Finally, there was the more casual couple holding a large sea shell on the beaches of Hawaii.  My favorite thing about creating a beach theme wedding cake topper is the sandy base with a custom message drawn in the sand!  Really, the possibilities are endless!

Whenever I think of a couple that has just gotten married, the image that comes to mind is of the groom sweeping his new bride off her feet and kicking open the door to their house so he can carry her over the threshold where they begin their new life as husband and wife!  It’s that moment that I try to capture with this “Over The Threshold” pose.

There are several variations to this pose… from the traditional bride tossing her bouquet to a scuba diver carrying his mermaid bride out of the water!  Be creative and think “what will best represent us at the time we get married?”  Some couples like to include their hobbies or careers.  Others like to include the family pet.  Whatever you decide, I can make it!  Remember, you are designing a sculpture that will last a life-time!

Have you thought about not using a cake topper but still want something to repesent you and your fiance’?  That is what I did when I got married!  I created a 12″ porcelain wedding sculpture that looked like me and my husband.  The wedding sculpture is too large to go on top of a cake but looks amazing next to it!  It can also be displayed next to the guest book or at the bride and grooms table.  The best thing is how lovely it looks displayed at home after the wedding!

Custom wedding cake topper of a sailor and nurse kissing

This custom wedding cake topper was inspired by Alfred Eisenstaedt’s famous photograph  of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square on Aug. 14, 1945, during the celebration to mark V-J Day, the end of World War II, that appeared in Life Magazine.  The details of the bride and groom were inspired by their own photographs.

If you are interested in commissioning a similar sculpture that can be used as a wedding cake topper, please contact me with your wedding date to ensure that there is time for me to create one for you.  Once you have confirmed I can create the custom cake topper for you, I will send you an invoice via PayPal for the 50% deposit.  The remaining balance plus shipping is due after I finish sculpting the custom wedding cake topper and you approve it but before I ship it to you.  The total cost of this custom wedding cake topper of a sailor and nurse kissing is $650.00 plus tax (if in Texas) and shipping.
